Hospital Building Award

Since 1997, the NHS has seen a huge investment in its fabric - the biggest hospital building programme in its history. This award will be made to the new hospital building project that raises the standard of the healthcare environment and demonstrates value for money and project management excellence.

2022 Winner: Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust - Heatherwood Hospital

Designed to reflect its woodland surroundings, sustainability was a fundamental part of the Heatherwood hospital’s design. The new £100 million building features state of the art laminar flow operating theatres, 48 in-patient beds, two endoscopy suites and six dedicated ‘eye rooms’.

2021 Winner
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust -  New Heatherwood Hospital

In a build that was considered essential works and allowed to continue through lockdown, and despite flooding difficulties during construction, the new Heatherwood hospital will be a flagship facility for Frimley Health, with the potential to double patient activity at over the next 10 years, offering specialist renal, cystic fibrosis, hyper-acute stroke, vascular and spinal services across a wider network.

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading cancer centres providing highly specialist cancer care to a population of 2.4 million people across Cheshire, Merseyside and the surrounding areas. Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, an 11-storey building which opened in June, has state-of-the-art facilities and will deliver a wide range of highly- specialist care including pioneering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplant, gene therapy and radiotherapy.

2019 Winner

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - Cambridge Biomedical Campus

Royal Papworth Hospital began its move to its new hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus on 23 April. This move was completed within three weeks, with the old site in Papworth Everard closing on 7 May. The hospital is designed around two main atria at the centre of the building, helping maximise natural light. The main reception is visible from the entrance and located centrally, while lifts accessing inpatient floors, as well as a link into the outpatient atrium, are located opposite reception. The new hospital includes five operating theatres, five catheter laboratories (for non‐surgical procedures) and two hybrid theatres, as well as 310 beds for patients, including a 46‐bed critical care unit. Most patients will have their own single, en suite rooms.

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust - Sheffield Children’s Hospital

The 8,000 square metre project, which also includes refurbishment of the adjacent existing wing and the rebuilding of a Victorian villa, provides a range of outpatients consulting, specialist diagnostic and treatment facilities, tying these together with a more user‐friendly circulation strategy. To reinforce the hospital’s transformation, Artist Morag Myerscough was commissioned to provide child‐appropriate bedroom environments, co‐designed with Architects, users and patients. The interiors bring an uplifting use of integrated colour and pattern.

2016 Winner

Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust — Cancer Treatment Centre

The culmination of more than 10 years of planning, the new 14-storey Cancer Centre brings the majority of Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancer treatment and research under one roof. Six linear accelerators will be the first radiotherapy machines in Europe to treat patients above ground level, which aims to help patients feel more comfortable in natural light and air. It is targeted to achieve BREEAM Healthcare Excellence Rating.

2015 Winner

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust - Cramlington Hospital

Touted as the first hospital of its kind in the country, the winning project has already been recognised at a national level by the medical director of NHS England when he described it as a 'glimpse of the future'. The result of 10 years work led by clinical teams, the building is specifically dedicated to emergency care.
