Hospital Catering Award

The Hospital Catering Award is presented to the NHS Trust that has strived to improve the standard of food and its nutritional value for the benefits of both patients and staff.

West Suffolk Hospital

Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has highlighted food at West Suffolk Hospital for particular praise. Patients, staff, and visitors are all served the same food across West Suffolk Hospital, with the trust going above and beyond this year to provide arrangements for overnight staff, who have access to hot meals via vending machines and microwave, as well as the introduction of an ‘afternoon tea’ service as a special culinary treat for inpatients

2019 Winner

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Nottingham University Hospitals serves 1,800 meals each day to patients on wards and these are created using fresh local ingredients with 77 per cent of its raw ingredient spend going on local ingredients – meat, fresh produce, bakery products and milk are all sourced from within the local region or adjacent county. Launched last year, the ‘Memory Menu’ initiative encourages patients to tuck in and help with their recovery, as well as helping older people eat well. This menu replaced the previous hospital mealtime menu on wards.

2018 Winner

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust

At Hinchingbrooke Hospital, the catering team produce more than 750 meals a day for patients on the wards, the on‐site nursery, as well as patients, staff and visitors using the garden restaurant. Head chef Lisa Normanton, who manages the Hinchingbrooke Hospital’s catering team, was commended for her work to change the catering provision and the health and nutrition strategy for children, patients, staff and visitors. She became the first chef from the NHS since 1993 to be presented with the Craft Guild of Chefs’ Public Sector Chef of the Year award.

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

A charity initiative to subsidise the food for parents of children with life - threatening or life-limiting illnesses was launched earlier this year. The scheme offers a daily £5 voucher for a meal for families to have at their child’s bedside. In April, the trust’s food offering was praised by Great British Bake-Off’s Pru Leith. More recently, the Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life’ team assisted the trust with its food specification with the recent appointment of a patient meals supplier..

Musgrove Park has been developing best practice initiatives in areas such as food waste reduction, and making cost savings of £120,000 per year without any loss in food quality. Moving to a same day system and working closely with its catering provider, housekeeping team and ward nurses, food waste was reduced from 21 per cent to five per cent through effective monitoring of patients’ needs and bed turnover. A new food folder provides housekeeping staff on each ward with a greater clarity on the meals offered.

e in-house catering team at this years' winner spends 80 per cent of its budget on ingredients from local suppliers, supporting local, independent businesses,aiding economical growth and helping the environment by reducing food miles. Since 2011, patient satisfaction levels regarding its hospital meals haveincreased from 48 per cent to 96 per cent in 2014-15.
